The English Language Club at ISU Highlights Real-World Careers for English Students

The English Language Club (ELC) of International Standard University (ISU) hosted an inspiring and insightful workshop titled "Words at Work: Career Paths for English Graduates" on Monday, 7 July 2025, aiming to dismantle the outdated notion that English degrees only lead to teaching careers.

The dynamic event was held under the esteemed guidance of Prof. Dr. Abdul Awal Khan, Vice-Chancellor of ISU, who graced the workshop as the Chief Guest. Prof. H.T.M. Quader Newaz, Treasurer; Prof. Asad ullah-al-Hussain, Advisor to the Department of English; and A.S.M. Saadul Quader, Associate Professor and Chairperson of the Department of English, attended as Special Guests. The session was chaired by Syeda Bhumika Mahmud, Moderator of ELC and Senior Lecturer in the Department of English.

The event featured three distinguished speakers—accomplished professionals who themselves are graduates of English studies—who shared how their academic foundation in English propelled them into diverse and fulfilling careers.

Asif Faisal, Deputy Manager of Communications at BRAC James P Grant School of Public Health, emphasized the transformative power of language. “Learning a language is not just about communication; it's about understanding how a culture thinks. Exploring its evolution fosters global awareness and perspective,” he stated.

Nafiur Ahmed, Project Manager at creative agency 4 Dimension, shared how a blend of language skills, strategic thinking, and storytelling led him to success in public policy and digital media. “When paired with some technical and soft skills, an English degree can unlock diverse opportunities in the job market,” he explained.

Shaon Arafat, acclaimed translator and sub-editor at The Daily Observer, recounted his transition from literary passion to professional success. “The English Department teaches us to think in layers and approach ideas without judgment,” he said.

With an engaged audience, thought-provoking discussions, and an energetic atmosphere, the "Words at Work" workshop served as a powerful reminder that a degree in English is not a limitation—it is a launchpad. The event affirmed ISU’s commitment to empowering students with a vision that blends academic excellence with real-world relevance.
